On June 25, 2017, Recording Academy Atlanta Chapter in conjunction with the Producers and Engineers Wing® presented an intimate event in the Great Room at W Atlanta - Buckhead. The room was filled with guests excited about meeting nine-time GRAMMY® winner Sheryl Crow and her long-term music partner Jeff Trott up-close. Senior Executive Director The Recording Academy® Atlanta Chapter Michele Caplinger, gave an enthusiastic opening speech by recognizing the people who had made this event possible, including sponsors, staff, and members of The Recording Academy. She encouraged members to be more involved, not only within The Recording Academy but also through events organized by Producers and Engineers Wing®, MusiCares® and the GRAMMY Museum®.

The audience watched a video that presented some of the GRAMMY’s fondest memories with Sheryl Crow. Michele then introduced the moderator for the event, Leslie Fram, the Senior Vice President of Music Strategy for CMT. After another short video showcasing Sheryl Crow and Jeff Trott’s collaboration, the musicians were welcomed onto stage.

Leslie asked Sheryl and Jeff a number of questions about their early musical influences, the collaboration process, and the making of Sheryl’s latest album Be Myself. Both musicians expressed how easy it had been working together, as they were able to make music organically from exchanging simple ideas. A topic that recurred during the conversation was social media in today’s music industry. While approving of social media’s powerful role in music promotion, Sheryl expressed her hope for the audience to engage with music itself rather than branding. Sheryl and Jeff also talked about fun experiences, such as writing the album after dropping off kids at school and recording in Sheryl’s barn with her horses. In addition, they recounted a poignant experience recording with Johnny Cash’s vocals.

During the conversation, Sheryl Crow expressed her gratitude to The Recording Academy, “The GRAMMYs changed my life in the most amazing ways.” Later on, Leslie shared with the audience reviews for Be Myself from Rolling Stone and the New York Times. She also praised Sheryl for being an inspiration to young artists.

The last questions for Sheryl came from the audience. One was about Sheryl’s views on the commercial use of her music. She restated that the music industry works differently nowadays due to the prevalence of social media, and that she as an artist is rather lenient about the use of her songs in movies. When asked how she maintains her voice, Sheryl quoted the late singer Gregg Allman, “Sleep. That’s the only thing that works.”

This event was sponsored by Producers & Engineers Wing, City National Bank, Sean O’Keefe Events, SESAC and W Atlanta – Buckhead
