About the Chapter

Memphis made its name as the gateway to the blues. As songs and musicians from rural Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama made their way up the Mississippi River they found a home in the Bluff City. As the city grew, so did the music scene. Music made its way into the clubs, churches, and street corners throughout the city. From clubs on Beale Street to the studios at Stax, Memphis was – and remains – a creative center for artists from the worlds of gospel, rockabilly, blues, Americana, rock, and folk. This marriage of rural and urban music gave life to the legendary Memphis sound.

The legacy of Memphis’ historical roots are synonymous with Elvis, Al Green, Sam and Dave, and Isaac Hayes and continues with home grown artists such as Justin Timberlake and Juicy J. The new generation carries on the Memphis tradition of merging and transforming the city’s diverse musical heritage in their sounds.

The Memphis Chapter of The Recording Academy services members from throughout southwest Tennessee as well as the Mississippi Delta and Louisiana.  From working with MusiCares in Louisiana after Katrina to hosting professional development events like the GRAMMY futureNOW conference, the Memphis Chapter has been committed to serving its members and the entire Memphis music community for 40 years.

On the right you will see our upcoming events. Please take a few minutes and explore not only what the Memphis Chapter is doing, but what all the Chapters have to offer in the way of professional development and opportunities for our members.
