NILES, IL - Thursday, May 15, 2014

Steve Lillywhite was in town this year for the Chicago Chapters P&E Wing event GRAMMY SoundTables: Behind the Glass with Steve Lillywhite in collaboration with our friends from Shure. Mark Brunner, Senior Director of Global Brand Management at Shure, lead the discussion, and the time flew as Lillywhite told stories of his humble beginnings during the punk wave in England to his rise as one of the most in-demand producers. Lillywhite enthusiastically shared stories about working with a new Irish band with a horribly recorded demo that peaked his interest. That band ended up being U2, and skyrocketed his career. Lillywhite also explained how he thinks outside the box as a producer. He was not happy with the dead sound of the recording studio, and moved the recording to the reception area to add more complexity to his recordings. That became “the sound.”

Lillywhite shared stories on working with artists from the Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, Morrissey, Dave Mathews, Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Psychedelic Furs, and the Talking Heads to name a few. Lillywhite mentioned that there are no rules when it comes the making records with the exception being “No food in the control room!” A good time was had by all.
