Chicago Chapter

Tomeka Reid is a Chicago based cellist, composer and educator. Recently described as a "New Jazz Power Source" by the New York Times, Chicago cellist/composer Tomeka Reid has emerged as one of the most original, versatile, and curious musicians in Chicago's bustling jazz and improvised music community over the last decade. Her distinctive melodic sensibility, usually braided to a strong sense of groove, has been featured in many distinguished ensembles over the years including reedists Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton, flutist Nicole Mitchell, singer Dee Alexander, and drummer Mike Reed. Reid leads her own ensemble the Tomeka Reid Quartet and coleads the string trio, Hear in Now.

The quote I live my life by is…

Do what is important to you and whatever it is do it with integrity and to the best of your ability.

If you could write one new law that everyone had to obey, what law would you create?

Be accepting of others differences!!

What is your favorite thing about the Chicago music scene?

It's sense of community. It's very unique to Chicago and unlike other my opinion.

Why did you choose your profession?

Because I like making music with others.

What are your 2 favorite albums?

Too hard to narrow down to just 2....
