Meet the Board: Tomeka Reid
Tomeka Reid is a Chicago based cellist, composer and educator. Recently described as a "New Jazz Power Source" by the New York Times, Chicago cellist/composer Tomeka Reid has emerged as one of the most original, versatile, and curious musicians in Chicago's bustling jazz and improvised music community over the last decade. Her distinctive melodic sensibility, usually braided to a strong sense of groove, has been featured in many distinguished ensembles over the years including reedists Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton, flutist Nicole Mitchell, singer Dee Alexander, and drummer Mike Reed. Reid leads her own ensemble the Tomeka Reid Quartet and coleads the string trio, Hear in Now.

What is your favorite thing about the Chicago music scene?
It's sense of community. It's very unique to Chicago and unlike other cities...in my opinion.

Because I like making music with others.
