On May 2nd, GRAMMY U Chicago members had the opportunity to see Desiigner in an edition of the GRAMMY U SoundChecks event series before his show at The Vic Theater on The Outlet Tour. His breakout hit “Panda” earned him a GRAMMY nomination in this year’s Best Rap Performance category.
GRAMMY U members were welcomed into the venue by Desiigner’s very hospitable promoter, Andrew Leavitt with AEG. He told us about a day in the life of his job and answered questions about his career and the music industry, then provided all members with refreshments and complimentary tickets to Desiigner’s show that night. Shortly after, Desiigner came out on stage for sound check and gave members a taste of what they were in for at his concert. Delivering his performance with such strong passion and intense energy levels, Desiigner’s sound check was conducted with just as much enthusiasm as he did in the concert that night.
Following the sound check, Desiigner shook hands with every member of GRAMMY U and allowed us the time to ask him questions. When his upcoming album, The Life of Desiigner, was discussed, he said that it is going to feature “music from every direction,” and stressed how he wants to connect with listeners to take them on a wave of his music. He also explained that his thought process when producing comes from “understanding life itself, everybody wants to party and bop”.
Overall, Desiigner is such a humble, creative individual, who was a pleasure to meet with and learn more about. He said he defines himself as an artist not a rapper, because a rapper just puts words on music, and he wants to “put art [on music], build art, and make it happen”. This is just what he does, and his unique outlook about the overall experience of music in collaboration with art has built him an empire of fans. With so much success at just twenty years old, the future has much more in store for Desiigner.
