On November 1, 2016 the Chicago Chapter GRAMMYU Members attended a SoundCheck with Troye Sivan in Chicago’s Uptown music venue, the Aragon Ballroom. Sivan is currently on The Suburbia international tour showcasing his 2016 singles and his debut album of last year, Blue Neighborhood. After hearing Troye and his band check levels and perform a couple songs from the album we got the chance to catch up with him off stage for a GRAMMYU Q&A.

Students asked what the recording process is like and how playing live impacts the music that he makes. Troye: “I love to play songs from my album that my fans have listened for and not just the singles or the really poppy ones. It’s important to have upbeat songs because otherwise your show could be quite boring, but for my next album I want to make more songs that aren’t just for pop appeal.”

After a few questions Troye gave us the rundown of what a typical day on tour looks like and what might be happening at different stops on tour.

Troye: “When I’m on tour and we are we want to push a single on radio a lot of our time consists of going to stations to do small performances and giveaway tickets to fans so that I can build an audience through these channels. It’s important to spend time with these people because you have to have a relationship if you want them to support you. You can’t just send emails and never pop in to say hi!”

After our group photo Troye’s team surprised students with a copy of his 2015 debut album, Blue Neighborhood.
