On Friday, August 25, 2017, GRAMMY U Los Angeles members were lucky enough to attend a sound check with Khalid at the Novo in Downtown LA. Khalid, a 19-year-old singer/songwriter from El Paso, Texas, released his album American Teen fresh out of high school. His breakout single ‘Location’ has garnered over 26.5 million Spotify streams and more than 110 million YouTube views.

The sound check started with Khalid’s band members who were rehearsing for the VMAs performance that would take place two days later. Then, Khalid hit the stage and our student members were in for a treat since he rehearsed various hits such as ‘Angel’, ‘Young Dumb and Broke’ and ‘Location’.

Later, we proceeded to the Q&A portion, during which Khalid talked candidly about many topics. He discussed the importance of surrounding yourself with good people, not confusing happiness with fame and also revealed some of his pre-show rituals.

Thanks Khalid for an incredible evening and for helping students understand what goes on behind-the-scenes!
