GRAMMY U Los Angeles members had the incredible opportunity of attending a sound check with SZA on Monday, September 25, 2017 at The Novo, in Downtown Los Angeles.  Born in St. Louis and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey, SZA became the first female artist to be signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). Her long-awaited major label debut album, Ctrl, was released in June of 2017 on TDE/RCA Records.

The sound check began when GRAMMY U students entered the venue to watch SZA’s band rehearse. Later, the artist herself hit the stage to go over many of her songs, including ‘Love Galore’ which was just recently certified Platinum by the RIAA for over 1,000,000 unit sales.

After the sound check portion, SZA brought all GRAMMY U members into her green room for an insightful Q&A. We talked about everything from her rise in the music industry to the people she surrounds herself with in the studio.

At the end, SZA even surprised every student member with tickets to the show! Big thanks to SZA and her wonderful team for hosting GRAMMY U during the Los Angeles leg of her ‘CTRL’ tour.
