On November 6, 2017 Saint Motel preformed for a group of GRAMMY U students during their private sound check at Tipitina’s in New Orleans, LA, where they played later that night. The Crescent City was the eighth stop on their headlining tour of North America. The Los Angeles-based kaleidoscopic rock band is touring in support of their newest album, saintmotelevision, which includes the hit single “Move.” Attendees of a Saint Motel concert can expect an interactive and immersive live performance: their use of exciting animations and visualizers on stage match the creativity and innovation found in saintmotelevision, the first-ever virtual reality album. After the sound check wrapped up, Saint Motel’s four members (A/J Jackson, Aaron Sharp, Dak Lerdamorngpong and Greg Erwin) sat down with GRAMMY U students for a Q&A session.

The discussion revolved around the music business, specifically focusing on the role that record labels hold and the overwhelming influence of labels in the industry. Primarily discussed were the deals labels make when signing new artists, what deals to avoid as a musician, and when the right time is to sign to a label, if ever. The band urged the student musicians not to sign too quickly or for the wrong reasons. They explained how publishing deals function and how ownership of master recording copyrights work. They provided ample invaluable advice for new musicians who are trying to turn their musical talents into a career, the most important of which was: “don’t chase trends, use your hometown to grow first and then move from there and focus on what you can control to use it to your advantage.” The students were extremely grateful for the experience, and for the honest, useful advice the band shared.
