Twenty-two lucky GRAMMY U members were granted the opportunity to attend SoundChecks with Alessia Cara and Ruth B. on Tuesday, October 4th at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. Alessia’s breakout single, “Here”, was certified RIAA double-platinum and was followed in November of 2015 with her debut album Know-It-All. Ruth B. initially garnered a following by posting short video clips to Vine; one of these would go on to become her breakthrough single “Lost Boy”, which was certified RIAA platinum. Ruth B.’s debut EP, The Intro, was also released in November 2015.
Members were brought into Radio City at approximately 4:00PM and, after a short greeting from Alessia Cara herself, were treated to two songs of the pop wonder’s sound check. Following Alessia’s sound check was an informal Q&A session with both her and Ruth B. Both singers were incredibly friendly and gracious, chatting happily with students and answering as many questions as there was time for. Both Alessia and Ruth expressed their passion for music, saying that it had “always been a part of [their lives]”. When asked who they dream of collaborating with, Alessia gushed over Frank Ocean, while Ruth described her admiration for Lauryn Hill and Stevie Wonder. After about 15 minutes of the Q&A, the members of GRAMMY U were able to sit for a group photo with Alessia and Ruth, after which Ruth took the stage for her own sound check. This concluded the SoundChecks, and GRAMMY U members left Radio City at approximately 5:15PM. It was an exciting and inspiring afternoon for all in attendance!
