On the road with their colossally successful Cleopatra World Tour, band members Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Caleb Fraites, and Neyla Pekarek of The Lumineers made a pit stop in Austin, Texas and let a few lucky GRAMMY U students watch their sound check and chat with them backstage!
As big advocates of GRAMMY U, the band members were excited to engage with students and let them know there is an avenue for them to ask questions – something they wish they had when they were just starting out.
The band kicked off their talk starting at step one: the songwriting process and what it was like to create the music they perform. They initially thought an ultra-formal creation process was going to set them up better for success, but really emphasized the fact that you don’t need fancy gear or studios to begin the creative process. It’s all about hustling, putting in the work, and making sure you’re passionate about what you’re creating! They also discussed their fluidity in the process, constantly combining elements of different songs to create the best of the best.
When talking about their major success the band members largely attributed it to practice. They would spend countless hours songwriting, countless hours in the studio, countless hours playing at live venues, etc. The chemistry they had with each other and the energy they got from their fans kept pushing them to make bigger and better music.
They wrapped up the discussion by reminding students to always stay true to themselves as an artist. Don’t make something just because other people are telling you that it’s popular, if you’re soul is not in it people will know. They recalled stories of going on tour as a whim with no money in their pockets, but because they were passionate, driven, and grounded everything seemed to work out for the best.
