On Monday, November 14 the Memphis Chapter, together with the Producers & Engineers Wing, hosted Up Close & Personal with Larry Crane in Studio A at the Stax Museum. Crane, an engineer, studio owner, and the founder and editor of Tape Op magazine, is well known to be an accomplished interviewer in his own right, so it was a treat to see the tables turned and get a deep dive into his famously unique perspectives on the art of recording. Memphis Chapter P&E Wing committee co-chair Gebre Waddell skillfully led the Portland, Oregon-based Crane through a retrospective of Crane’s more than 20-year career, covering his philosophies of capturing performances and what makes a great recording. Crane, whose credits include Sleater-Kinney, the Go-Betweens and the Decemberists, as well as a long-time working relationship with the late, revered Elliot Smith, delighted the audience with his in-depth knowledge of Memphis musical history. Attendees included such Memphis recording luminaries as David Porter, Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, Jeff Powell and Matt Ross-Spang.
