Deconstructing the Hit with Kevin Killen presented by the Producers & Engineers Wing® and the Recording Academy® Philadelphia Chapter took shape on the evening of July 11 at Philly Sound Studios. Located in South Philadelphia, the converted church studio provided a great environment for an intimate discussion with the GRAMMY-winning engineer about the creative and technical decisions that go into mixing a hit song.

Kevin’s ProTool sessions were projected on a large screen, providing a visual guide for the discussion.  GRAMMY-winning engineer and P&E Committee Co-Chair Phil Nicolo led Kevin on an in depth look at Brandon Flower’s hit Between Me and You, a record with 110 tracks. Killen walked the attendees through how to manage a session so large and talked about his minimal approach when it comes to cutting records. From there they looked at building the mix, and some of the key technical decisions along the way.

Guests for the evening included Philly Sound owner Drew Raison and his engineers, along with producers and engineers Ivan Barias, Ryan Schwabe, and Ryan Moys, Man Man and others. Killen stayed for a reception following the lecture to chat with attendees about gear, mixing and much more.

Special thanks to Philly Sound Studios staff, the P&E Wing and committee and all the night’s guests.

This was a great event. Kevin was down to earth and what he shared was useful and confirming information. He’s a really nice guy too!
