March 2 – Los Angeles – P&E Wing Panel on SoundExchange

The Recording Academy® Los Angeles Chapter Producers & Engineers Wing® Committee hosted a panel unearthing the ins-and-outs of SoundExchange at Hollywood’s Musicians Institute Concert Hall. To kick off the evening, SoundExchange Director of Artist & Industry Relations Wade Metzler described to an audience of nearly 200 members and guests the overall functions of SoundExchange, where it fits into the digital streaming landscape and why it is important for artists to register.

Representing the various creator perspectives were GRAMMY®-winning producer Om'Mas Keith (Frank Ocean), GRAMMY-nominated producer/mixer Billy Bush (Garbage, Neon Trees, Boxer Rebellion) and Jerimaya Grabher, owner/co-founder of producer/engineer/mixer/artist management company Global Positioning Services (GPS). Moderated by P&E Wing Managing Director Maureen Droney, the panelists examined the importance of following SoundExchange protocol regarding letters of direction, and discussed how revenue is tracked and collected and how to register songs with SoundExchange to maximize income.

An audience Q&A followed the panel, during which spirited members of The Recording Academy asked direct and thoughtful questions, highlighting the importance of understanding the marketplace in order to maximize income from digital radio and streaming services. All attendees came away with increased understanding of how SoundExchange can be an important part of music creators’ overall digital marketplace strategy.

March 17 – Austin – "Hi-Res Audio in Every Earbud" Panel at SXSW

The Consumer Technology Association (formerly the Consumer Electronics Association) hosted a panel at SXSW to explore consumer trends in the High-Resolution Audio market. CTA Senior Vice President of Communications Strategic Relations Jeff Joseph was joined by Sony Electronics Vice President of Audio Video Specialty/Custom Integration Frank Sterns, P&E Wing Managing Director Maureen Droney and Tidal’s Strategic Partnership Manager Pal Bratelund to discussed educating consumers on the benefits of investing in HRA music files and equipment and how emerging artists can use HRA as an avenue to differentiate themselves.

March 29 – St. Louis – P&E Wing Listening Session and Outreach Reception at Jazz St. Louis

The Recording Academy Memphis Chapter hosted its P&E Wing Listening Session and Outreach Reception at Jazz St. Louis. Attendees included more than 50 producers, engineers, artists and recording technology students primarily from the St. Louis area. Memphis Chapter Advisor Justin Fisher and Memphis Chapter Sr. Membership & Project Manager Reid Wick served as hosts. Attendees played a wide variety of music for session participants, generating much discussion about equipment and techniques used in making the various recordings. Following the success and overflow demand of last year’s Listening Session, the event was moved to a larger location and accommodated twice as many attendees.
