December 2 – 5 – Texas – P&E Wing Texas Tour: Advanced Vocal Techniques with Melodyne
The Recording Academy Texas Chapter, in conjunction with the Producers & Engineers Wing, spent the first week of December on the road, hosting the P&E Wing Texas Tour: Advanced Vocal Techniques with Melodyne series. The tour made stops at Dallas’s Audio Dallas Recording Studio, Austin’s Same Sky Productions, San Antonio’s CBC Studio, and Houston’s SugarHill Recording Studios. This professional development event featured Celemony’s 2012 Technical GRAMMY-winning vocal editing software, Melodyne. Melodyne software expert and consultant Ray Williams of Music Marketing, Inc. led in-depth and interactive presentations, providing insider tips and tricks at each stop of the tour.

December 12 – San Francisco – P&E Wing Surround Nominee Listening Event
The Recording Academy® San Francisco Chapter invited P&E Wing members to a 5.1 surround sound listening session showcasing the nominated entries in the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards® category of Best Surround Sound Album. January 21 – Los Angeles – 7th Annual P&E Wing GRAMMY Week Celebration Honoring Neil Young
The Producers & Engineers Wing kicked off another remarkable GRAMMY Week with its 7th Annual P&E Wing GRAMMY Week Celebration. This year’s honoree, Neil Young, is well known as an outspoken champion of both artistic and sonic integrity, and event attendees were eager to hear what he had to say on those topics.

The evening began with passed hors d’oeuvres and libations in the arrivals tent, where Pensado’s Place was set up and filming on one end, while local band The Get Down Boys played lively bluegrass tunes on the other. Inside the labyrinthine venue a variety of delicious fare was to be found in every studio as guests mingled and enjoyed against the backdrop of a retrospective of Young’s musical work.

A little past the midway point of the night, P&E Wing Senior Executive Director Maureen Droney and Village Studios Owner/CEO Jeff Greenberg began the honoree presentation with welcome remarks; after which The Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow introduced a video clip of Young’s illustrious career and then presented him with the President’s Merit Award. Young uncharacteristically spoke at length to a rapt audience, making jokes as he shared anecdotes and his personal philosophy on recording and sound quality—as well as a plug for his current high-quality audio project, Pono. When he brought his speech to a finish, P&E Wing Co-Chair Mike Clink and founding member Ed Cherney gave Young the traditional P&E Wing trophy. The night was not without its share of surprises, chief among them being Dave Matthews’s appearance at the end of the presentation to perform an acoustic set of three songs, the traditional “Rye Whiskey,” and Young's “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue),” and “the Needle and the Damage Done.”
