April 6 – Dallas – GRAMMY Pro Studio Summit

The Recording Academy® Texas Chapter, in partnership with the Producers and Engineers Wing®, presented GRAMMY Pro® Studio Summit at The W Dallas Victory Hotel. The third in a series of cross-state events that covered publishing deals in Houston in September and revenue streams and resources for independent artists in Austin in November, the Dallas installment focused on producing and engineering.

The day featured GRAMMY®-winning engineer and mixer Tony Maserati and GRAMMY, Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated producer and P&E Wing Co-Chair Harvey Mason, Jr. Maserati discussed mixing techniques and strategies, how he manages the intricacies of working with artists via the Internet, and how production and mixing intertwine . He also shared personal examples of client feedback he gets on mixes and how he addressed it, emphasizing the teamwork it takes to get a project completed.

Mason spoke about the importance of studying your craft and taking projects that allow you to grow. He also shared anecdotes and his how he adjusts his work style to fit the artist’s. Touching on his work as a film music producer, he compared the workflow for film versus records and gave specifics on how he created the music for some of his top film projects.

Rounding out the summit was a panel with Producers & Engineers Wing Managing Director Maureen Droney, Dallas-area entertainment attorney and former Texas Board member Tamera Bennett, and Mason, Jr., addressing key music advocacy issues that affect producers and engineers today. The panel provided information and resources to members on how they can get involved with The Recording Academy’s advocacy efforts.

April 7 – Atlanta – GRAMMY Pro Up Close & Personal with Butch Walker & Dave Cobb

The Recording Academy Atlanta Chapter, in association with the P&E Wing, hosted the latest GRAMMY Pro Up Close and Personal event at The W Atlanta Buckhead Hotel. The gathering featured an intimate conversation with GRAMMY-nominated producer Butch Walker (Pink, Katy Perry, Weezer) and GRAMMY-winning producer Dave Cobb (Shooter Jennings, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton).

After a cocktail reception and mixer, attendees moved to the W’s ballroom, where Atlanta Chapter Sr. Executive Director Michele Caplinger and Chapter President Thom "TK" Kidd took the stage to welcome VIP guests and thank sponsors. P&E Wing Managing Director Maureen Droney provided an update on the P&E Wing's national initiatives, then, following a video montage highlighting Walker's and Cobb's accomplishments, the two took the stage for the main event: a candid conversation and Q&A session with these two recording luminaries.

Walker provided his perspective on songwriting and production, noting, "It’s hard to schedule creativity; you just have to let it come when it comes." "There is no end to failures,” he continued.  “There is always going to be a pitfall. Once you overcome the fear of failure, it allows you to get back on your feet. You can't be scared to tackle it and overcome it."

Cobb commented on his recent double-GRAMMY win at the 58th GRAMMYs: "Being there and receiving two GRAMMYs just doesn’t seem real. I left in a daze." An audience question led to Cobb summing up his essential elements for making a record, remarking, "A good song, great talent, and a great studio are how to make a great record."

Event sponsors included City National Bank, Delta, DTS, Sean O’Keefe Events and W Atlanta Buckhead.
