August 24 - Philadelphia - P&E Wing: In the Studio

Philadelphia P&E Wing members gathered for another session of In the Studio, a networking event for technical professionals. Guests gathered at the legendary Studio 4 in Conshohocken, Pa., owned by Philadelphia Chapter P&E Wing Co-Chair Phil Nicolo. Studio 4 was the in-house studio for Ruff House Records, which was the home of acts such as Lauryn Hill and The Fugees, Kris Cross, and many more. Nicolo graciously hosted the group alongside business partner Will Yip, giving a tour of the studio, discussing some current projects and sharing studio war stories. Yip is a former GRAMMY U® student who attained voting status through his work with breakout bands like Title Fight and Circa Survive. Nicolo played some of his latest work, detailing tricks he used while recording them, and Yip played tracks from some of the new bands that he is working with. Special thanks to the two hosts, as well as the entire staff of Studio 4 for an awesome experience.

August 29 - Nashville - P&E Wing panel at Mix Nashville

After a two-year hiatus, Mix Nashville returned, offering a discounted registration fee for all Recording Academy members. Held at Clair Nashville, the conference was attended by producers, engineers, and other industry professionals. The Nashville Chapter organized a panel comprised of local P&E Wing Committee Co-Chair F. Reid Shippen, former committee co-chair Jacquire King and P&E Wing Steering Committee member Jeff Balding to talk about mixing in the box or off the rack, and mixing in a hybrid digital/analog world.

August 30 - Los Angeles - Second Annual Pensado Awards

More than 500 recording and pro-audio professionals gathered at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City for the Second Annual Pensado Awards.  Created to acknowledge creative recording professionals who work behind the glass, the ceremony kicked off with welcome remarks from co-hosts Chris Lord-Alge, Young Guru, Randy Jackson, Sylvia Massy and Justin Meldal-Johnsen before jumping in to the awards presentation.  The ceremony produced winners in categories such as OMG! Mix of the Year, Master of Mastering, Breakthrough Mixer, and Tracking Engineer among others, including the especially popular AIR (Assistant/Intern/Runner) Award. The P&E Wing supported the evening as a premium sponsor and many P&E Wing leaders were in attendance including founding members Ed Cherney and Al Schmitt, Advisory Council members Gavin Lurssen and Brian Malouf, Steering Committee member Ann Mincieli, and more. Pro-audio manufacturers and friends of the Wing Focusrite and Native Instruments both took home awards for their technical innovations and legendary engineer Bruce Swedien was presented with the Pensado Giant Award as an icon of the industry.  The evening concluded with an after party co-headlined by Mix Master Mic and Young Guru, both of whom DJ’d sets to keep the party rocking.
