September 25 – Memphis – Listening Session at Dockside Studio in Lafayette

The Recording Academy® Memphis Chapter hosted a P&E Wing Listening Session at Dockside Studio in Lafayette, welcoming a mix of local producers and engineers, from GRAMMY-winning members to new friends, with Scott Billington and Chris Finney even making the drive from New Orleans. After enjoying jambalaya and po-boys at the studio’s pool house, attendees moved to the studio’s control room to listen to and discuss a wide variety of new local music.

September 26 – Los Angeles – Listening Session with Haim & Ariel Rechtshaid

Recording Academy members converged on United Recording Studios for an intimate P&E Wing Listening Session with HAIM moderated by GRAMMY-winning producer and LA Chapter Board member Ariel Rechtshaid. Sisters Danielle, Este, and Alana Haim described the process of recording their latest album, Something To Tell You, covering topics including their experiences navigating the industry as women and the personal stories behind the album’s lyrics.

Rechtshaid catered to attendees’ technical interests, providing visuals of various session files created during the making of the album. He detailed his process of curating sounds, including reaching out to Ruud Weiner via YouTube to feature his Simmons Silicon Mallet on one of the tracks. Attendees were also treated to a clip from Haim’s short film Valentine, shot by director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood). The evening closed with a moving rendition of Haim’s “Found It In Silence” with a string quartet joining the band onstage.

September 27 – Memphis – Behind the Glass: Celebrating 60 Years of Royal Studios in Memphis

The Memphis Chapter hosted Behind The Glass: Celebrating 60 Years of Royal Studios at Royal Studios in Memphis. The event kicked off with a social hour, where attendees enjoyed the soul food provided by Royal’s secret weapon, the Mitchell family’s cooking skills. A highlight of the night was a lively conversation on the history of Royal, Willie Mitchell’s role in the development of the classic Memphis soul sound, and the many classic recordings created there. Sharing songs and stories were GRAMMY-winning producer Steve Jordan, GRAMMY-winning engineer Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, producer/engineer Niko Bolas and Memphis Chapter President Gebre Waddell, who served as moderator for the discussion.
