Martin Garrix On Remixing, Touring & Production
While in Miami for Ultra Music Festival, DJ prodigy Martin Garrix sat down with GRAMMY Pro to talk about the process of choosing songs to remix, his production software of choice, and how he tests new material out on stage.
“I really like to work in a dark studio so it’s only me and the screen, and I’m, like, in my own producing world,” Garrix shared.
Born Martijn Garritsen in Amsterdam, Garrix set his sights on becoming a DJ at age 8 after seeing GRAMMY nominee Tiësto perform during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In 2012 Garrix signed with Spinnin' Records and released his first single "BFAM" with fellow electronic/dance artist Julian Jordan. He gained wider fame with a remix of Christina Aguilera's hit "Your Body," which appeared on the deluxe version of her 2012 album Lotus. "Animals," Garrix's debut solo single, was released in 2013. The track cracked the Top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and currently has been viewed more than 304 million times on YouTube.
Garrix is currently in the midst of an international tour, with dates scheduled through October.
