San Francisco Chapter and P&E Wing Mastering Workshop Event

On February 26, 60 Members of The Recording Academy® San Francisco Chapter attended a mixer and two-hour workshop at Michael Romanowski Mastering at Coast Recorders in San Francisco. The evening was presented by GRAMMY® nominated mastering engineer Michael Romanowski with mastering experts Piper Payne and Paul Stubblebine and facilitated by Gino Robair. Guests attended an introduction about the importance of mastering with a discussion on the transition from final mix to master before breaking out into three groups that rotated through the live room and mastering suites for specific perspectives on the process from each of the engineers, including an overview of vinyl mastering with Paul Stubblebine. Content included preparation of a mix for mastering, digital vs. analog masters, preparing for different applications such as radio or commercial release, and an ongoing open dialog and Q&A with the mastering engineers. The evening included a mixer and tour of Coast Recorders, a historic Bill Putnam designed San Francisco recording institution.
