Texas Chapter Board Spotlight | SaulPaul
What do you do in the music industry?
I am a Songwriter and Performer.
I am an Artist, and Entrepreneur. I am the co-owner of ReRoute Music Group.
I started the label as a platform to release my recordings, and it grew into something much more. We produce not only music, but music festivals, movies, mobile gaming apps and books, all based on the music I create.
As an artist, I am the chief content creator at ReRoute Music Group. I write the songs, and then I create a world around those songs via other media platforms. For example, take a look at my most recent project Dream in 3D. I wrote and performed the songs on the album Tower to Tower 2. Then I wrote a book, Dream in 3D, which is based on one of the songs. Next, I conceptualized the mobile gaming app and provided all the music for the app titled SaulPaul: Dream in 3D (Available at iTunes and GooglePlay). Finally, I created a touring music festival that highlighted different songs and brought them to life. This festival is called SaulPaul's Dream in 3D Music and Arts Festival.
I'm just an artist. I create. Then I get with our team at ReRoute Music Group, and they help bring these ideas to life.
It seems like a lot but really for me it is all just storytelling – and it all starts with a song.
I'm just a Songwriter and Performer.
What does being a member of The Recording Academy mean to you?
I love being a member of The Recording Academy. I initially got involved in 2011 and haven't looked back. The music industry is huge, but being a part of The Recording Academy helps make navigating your way through the music industry more manageable. The Recording Academy isn't exclusive, but there are certain qualifications one must meet to be a part of it, and I've found that this has allowed me to meet and work with better qualified people. In turn, this has helped me to build relationships with the right people so I can make the right moves.
As I have grown in my career and built my business, being a part of The Recording Academy has been a great benefit.
I also like that I can play a part in advocacy as well as my role on the Education Committee and helping to plan Texas Chapter’s GRAMMY Career Day.
What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the music industry?
I would first tell that person to envision what you want to accomplish.
Be flexible and know that your goal might change as you learn more, but start with some sort of vision.
Then, with the intent of bringing that vision to fruition, start meeting people. Network. Join the Recording Academy, utilize GRAMMYPro.com, attend Recording Academy events and find a place where you add some value and serve your way to success.
Tell us about the musical influences and inspirations that helped to shape your career.
I am inspired by good storytelling and great songwriting. Obviously I like some country music, but primarily hip hop artists such as Scarface and Tupac have always been inspirations. Songwriters like Pharrell and Diane Warren inspire me as well. I also love creative music producers, so Timbaland and Dr. Dre definitely influenced me. If we're talking career, I think of things such as longevity, so I have to mention Willie Nelson. He is over 80 years old, and he literally headlined an event yesterday. Literally. I want to be like that when I grow up.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently promoting my Tower to Tower 2 album. I was recently invited to perform at SXSW as an official showcasing artist. I have also been invited to perform at the Power of Music Fest, a songwriter's conference in Arkansas, as well as the Music Biz Association conference in Nashville later this year.
In addition, I'm working on a Children's Album and an International Album. Both albums will be a remix of my current Tower to Tower 2 album.
I will be re-recording Tower To Tower 2 with a famed children's choir. I am excited about this Children's Album because we already have an audience of tens of thousands of young people that are anticipating it. This is because each year I travel the country and work with youth.
In addition, I am working on re-recording select songs from my Tower to Tower 2 album with artists from South America, South Africa and Europe. The first single will be the World remix to my song “Motivation”. I recorded the new song with Bongi and Collin from South Africa. They sang the chorus in Zulu. It came out great, and we shot the video while we were on tour together in Cannes, France at MIDEM last summer.
