Texas Chapter Board Spotlight | Tim Palmer
What do you do in the music industry?
I have been a Producer/Mixer for over 30 years now. I started engineering and producing in London studios during the crazy '80s, and I am now a studio owner and mixer living in Austin, Texas. A lot has changed since I started in the business - recordings have gone from analog to digital, and music has gone from being reasonably priced to free.
What does being a member of The Recording Academy mean to you?
I became a member of The Recording Academy quite late in my career after I was nominated for my mixing with U2 in 2002, I now regret that I left it so long!
To be part of an organization that is trying to improve the landscape for music makers in our country is very important to me. Through the advocacy part of the Academy, we are standing together to improve the way we conduct our business to ensure that future musicians and players can actually have a career in music. Music has been so important to me throughout my life, and I will do all I can to improve the way we make and sell it. I really enjoy being able to share and learn from other members of the creative community. I figure that after about 30 years in the business, I can offer support to newer music makers, and the GRAMMY U program has given me the opportunity to meet and hopefully give some good advice to our future producers and engineers.
What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the music industry?
It’s not always going to be an easy career path - so be sure, be determined and most importantly, be talented.
Tell us about the musical influences and inspirations that helped to shape your career.
My career was shaped by simply loving music. Listening to albums and seeing live bands play in the late '70s and early '80s like The Clash at Hammersmith Palais was all life changing stuff.
What projects are you currently working on?
I recently produced the new Blue October album with Justin Furstenfeld, and am happy to report that the single ‘Home' has been on the Hot AC charts for over 6 months now. I also mixed the latest album from The Mission who are a UK band that I have produced many times before. I continue to mix many albums for producer Larry Klein (who was nominated for ‘Producer of the Year’ for the 58th GRAMMYs). Some artists I have mixed recently for Larry include Kandace Springs for Blue Note and Lang Lang for Sony.
